Sheinbaum Calls for Public Meeting on Tariffs

The head of government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, called for a press conference on Sunday to address the issue of tariffs imposed by the United States on Mexico. She explained that the tariffs are taxes applied to Mexican exports to the U.S. and emphasized the importance of informing citizens about the agreement reached and its impact.

Sheinbaum called on all citizens to attend the conference and learn about the plan that will be implemented in response to Donald Trump's tariff threats. She clarified that the invitation is open to everyone, regardless of their political affiliation.

The leader plans to inform about the state of negotiations regarding the tariffs at 11:00 AM. Following Trump's decision to impose a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada, the Mexican government seeks to continue negotiating and has sought to establish contact with U.S. authorities.

In a conference, Sheinbaum announced that she would have a phone call with Trump on Thursday, March 6, to discuss the situation regarding the tariffs. Trump, for his part, suggested the possibility of extending the tariffs on automobiles assembled in Mexico and Canada by one month.

U.S. officials met with leaders of automotive companies to discuss the implementation of tariffs. The elimination of tariffs on agricultural products is also considered to reduce trade tensions between the two countries.

Sheinbaum indicated that they are prepared for different scenarios in case the tariffs continue and hopes for the results of ongoing negotiations. The leader confirmed the holding of a meeting with citizens and a rally in the Zócalo of Mexico City on Sunday, March 9.

During a press conference, Sheinbaum urged to wait for possible announcements and called for unity instead of criticism in the face of the current situation. The president presides over a conference from the National Palace accompanied by her presidential cabinet to address this matter of national relevance and its possible impact on the country.
